My Personal Assessment of the Barcelona–Palma Route
After more than 150 crossings on this route, I can tell you: the Barcelona–Palma ferry is the lifeline
between mainland Spain and Mallorca. When I first sailed this route in 2005 – back then on the old
"Sorolla" – I was captivated by the idea of boarding in Barcelona in the evening and waking up refreshed
in Palma. That fascination has never left me. Today, with three competing operators and more modern ships,
you have more choice than ever. Let me show you what really matters.

What to Expect On Board
The Evening Routine
Boarding typically begins 90 minutes before departure for vehicles and 60 minutes for foot passengers. Once on board,
you will find yourself on a large cruise-style vessel with multiple decks. The ships used on this route are proper
overnight ferries, not small boats – they carry up to 1,000 passengers and several hundred vehicles.
After settling into your cabin or finding a comfortable seat in the lounge, head up to the open deck to watch
Barcelona's illuminated skyline recede into the distance. The on-board restaurants serve dinner until around 23:30,
though I recommend eating in Barcelona beforehand to save money.
Cabin Options
All three operators offer a range of cabin types, from basic four-berth inside cabins to premium suites with
sea views. For a detailed breakdown of what is available, see our cabin guide.
My recommendation: even the cheapest inside cabin is vastly superior to spending the night in a reclining seat.
The small extra cost is one of the best investments you can make for your holiday.
Morning Arrival
Ships arrive in Palma between 05:00 and 06:30 depending on the operator. An announcement wakes cabin passengers
about 30 minutes before arrival. The breakfast buffet opens early – it is reasonably priced and saves you
scrambling for food in Palma at dawn. Disembarkation is swift: foot passengers leave first, then vehicles
are released deck by deck.
Thomas' Tried-and-Tested Crossing Tips
Cabin insider tip: Book an outside cabin on deck 7 or 8. It is quieter than the lower decks
and you wake up with a sea view. On Baleària, cabins 7201–7220 are particularly peaceful.
Plan your meals wisely: On-board restaurants are pricey (€18–25 for a basic meal).
Bring sandwiches from Barcelona or eat in the city before boarding. The breakfast buffet from 05:00 is
fairly priced, however.
Check-in timing: With a vehicle, genuinely arrive 90 minutes early! In high season,
queues build up quickly. As a foot passenger, 60 minutes suffices, but 75 minutes is more relaxed.
Arrival in Palma: EMT bus line 1 takes you to the city centre or airport for just €3.
Much cheaper than the €25 taxi fare and just as quick!
For British Travellers: The Flight + Ferry Option
Many British visitors discover that flying to Barcelona and taking the overnight ferry to Palma is a brilliant
way to start a Mallorca holiday. Budget airlines offer cheap flights from most UK airports to Barcelona El Prat.
Spend a couple of days exploring the city, then board the evening ferry. You sleep on board, saving a night's
hotel costs, and wake up in Palma ready for your island adventure. See our complete
fly and ferry guide for detailed itineraries and transport connections.
